The Sunday premiere of season 2 of The Walking Dead on AMC broke basic cable records in two different demographics. The 90 minute episode drew 7.3 million viewers, the most for any basic cable drama in history.

The episode was a big hit in the much sought after demo of adults 18 to 49 with 4.8 million viewers, and in the adults 25 to 54 demo it attracted 4.2 million viewers, both records. It also had a 4.8 household rating which broke a cable TV record that has stood for more than 10 years.

The ratings are 36% higher than the any of the first season's episodes, including the series debut last Halloween which drew 5.3 million viewers as the highest rated cable drama of 2010.
